At Lewis Interiors, we like to honor the great designers of the furniture we are so passionate about. Mid Century Modern furniture and designs make the world go 'round in our book!
Today's feature is the great American modern furniture designer, Milo Ray Baughman, Jr. (10/07/23 – 07/23/03). A Kansas born creative that grew up Long Beach, California, Milo Baughman designed countless pieces that are still in high demand today. Milo served 4 years in the Army Air Force during World War II, designing officer’s clubs along the way.
During his career, Baughman designed for many furniture companies, including DIA (Design Institute of America), George Kovacs, Directional, Henredon and Drexel, and Mode Furniture. His most famous connection, however, was his long-lasting design relationship with Thayer Coggin Inc., of High Point, North Carolina, with whom he designed for nearly 50 years. Milo Baughman was inducted into the Furniture Designer’s Hall of Fame in 1987. Contemporary furniture designers and dealers continue to copy, reinvent, and revive his work to this day.
Milo Baughman’s most famous and iconic designs include: the “951-103” chair, the “820-400” chaise, the “989-103" lounge chair, and the “955-304” sofa.
Here are our favorite quotes from Milo Baughman:
“Furniture that is too obviously designed is very interested, but too often belongs only in museum.”
“When I left Art Center, I thought Modern design would change the world. Now, I no longer have such lofty hopes, but perhaps the world is just a bit better off because of it. In any event, good Modern has already proven to be the most enduring, timeless, and classic of all design movements.”
