A MODERN BLOG FOR THE MIDCENTURY ENTHUSIAST
Tweed Fabric Suppliers
In it's official definition, "Tweed is a rough, woolen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It is usually woven with a plain weave, twill or herringbone structure. Color effects in the yarn may be obtained by mixing dyed wool before it is spun." In the Lewis Interiors definition, great tweed fabric starts here!
As the Internet's premier tweed fabric suppliers, this timeless upholstery product definitely our favorite fabric to use when building or refurbishing furniture. Why? Because it's durable, quality fabric that almost everyone can agree on! Our favorite color to use is classic gray.... and we use many shades of gray tweed (maybe not 50 Shades of Gray, but close!). What is your favorite color of tweed? What is your favorite furniture fabric?
Mid Century Modern Definition
What is MCM? Well, it stands for Mid Century Modern. This term is thrown around so much these days, that it is often being used as a catch phrase for anything vintage. In reality, the mid century modern definition itself is a difficult term to define. It broadly describes architecture, furniture, and graphic design from the middle of the 20th century (roughly 1933 to 1965, though some would argue the period is specifically limited to 1947 to 1957). The timeframe is a modifier for the larger modernist movement, which has roots in the Industrial Revolution at the end of the 19th century and also in the post-World War I period.
That being said, to keep up with the times - even we find ourselves using the term MCM outside of it's real realm. Does it really matter? Yes and no. Depends on the purpose of the talk, in our opinion. For searching purposes online, we use it much more liberally than we would in conversation with our peers who know a thing or two about MCM furniture. What are your thoughts? Lewis Interiors has many MCM vintage furniture items available in our eBay store!
